NUIG V Buccs

NUIG travelled to Athlone on Sunday the 15th of January to take on rivals Buccaneers in their first meeting of the Connacht women’s league. With our own ladies hoping to maintain their position at the stop of the table. Buccaneers as always would prove to be an extremely tough challenge. From the offset each side tested each other, though it was the students who came off the better as they remained for majority of the opening half camped deep within the home sides 22. Scrumhalf Coleen Nevin and out half Shannen Lane bossed the game well from their respective positions, using the pack well to gain precious ground bringing them closer and closer to the whitewash. The Athlone ladies maintained a solid defensive line managing to keep the Galway girls out for the opening 25minutes. It was Orla Dixon who was to be the first to cross the line sitting down for the games first five points after some immense pressure from the students, Brid Reddington, Rachel Buckley and Captain ‘Goldie Locks ‘ each carrying ball well before Dixon found a gap in the Buccaneers defensive line, out half Lane adding the extras. The half time score 7-0 to the Galway girls.
